In the fall of 1997, Sheila and I learned of a prophetic conference being held at a church just a few hours from our home in Texas. We decided to attend. As the meeting progressed into the evening, the speaker, Dr. Mildred Harris, became filled with the Holy Spirit and began to prophesy over several people around the platform. Mildred began walking around the people which were now clustered around the front of the small church. We were sit- ting in the back, and I said to Sheila, “I have to get up there and get under this powerful anointing.”
So I left my seat and proceeded to the front of the church and stood up against the edge of the plat- form. The atmosphere was filled with the power of God, and you could feel the Spirit’s presence. It became difficult to even stand in the place. Mildred was moving and prophesying near where I stood and then turned and began walking towards me. As she approached, the power of the Spirit collapsed my knees and I dropped to the floor. I remember rolling on my back and opening my eyes to see Mildred speaking the following words over me:
“You shall be as a bridge builder, and you shall bring people together. You shall reach out even more as the Lord shall even stretch forth thine hands to reach out to a new people. And they shall follow thee. You shall be as a Moses unto them, and you shall bring them out of darkness into light; for they shall even see through thine countenance that you have been in the presence of the Lord…and they shall see! And you will have a word. And the Lord will place that word in your mouth, and you shall speak and the people will listen—a bridge builder, bringing reconciliation and healing.”
After the evening was over, we drove home and decided to call the church to see if they had record- ed the evening. They did and sent us a recording of Mildred’s prophecy. It has become part of my cherished “jewels” from the Lord. Just recently, I wrote a letter to Mildred and shared the word she spoke over me some 25 years earlier. She, of course, did not remember the word but was deeply touched by the fact that after so many years, she would hear from someone so powerfully moved by the Lord’s hand upon her life.
Dr. Mildred Harris is the founder and CEO of God First Church and Ministries which was founded in 1978. Dr. Harris is also a commissioner for the Chicago Housing Authority. Mildred is an amazing minister, and though in her eighties, still keeps a very busy life for God and country.
