Armored Closet LLC is the first company in the United States to offer a Tornado Shelter & Safe Room into existing homes — and into existing closet spaces.
In the summer of 2012, seventeen tornados came through the Dallas/Ft. Worth Texas area. One was just eight blocks from our house. Sheila told me that she needed a tornado shelter for our home. I had just recently closed down our home building business — Dove Homes of Texas — so I was ready to move into action.
I checked out the internet and found that no shelter manufacturer offered a modular unit that could be installed in my family room closet. So, I got busy and started designing my own all-steel shelter. The first one was modular but quite heavy — almost 500 lbs. each section. But I thought the idea of an in-home shelter was marketable, so I formed and registered a company named ARMOREDCLOSET, created brochures, and built a website.
In the first year and a half, I had attained two patents on our design. The first three years of business were remarkable. We sold shelters every day for over three years. Sheila handles all our bookkeeping, taxes and helps me manage the work.
Now after twelve years in business, we have regular builder clients and large corporations buying the Armored Closet.
